Durban is the largest city in the coastal province of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa. The cultural scene of Durban has a distinct Asian vibe. Durban is abundance of food and spirits with Zulu music and particularly sunny weather almost through out the year.

Zulu kingdom is the land of traditional Zulu dance. Overloaded lorries is the common way to commute. A visit to Zulu kraal and Shakaland is a must do. Zulu Isicholo hats are a must buy. Zululand is at the heart of Durban.

The Golden Mile is a popular stretch that extends for about four miles from Blue Lagoon south to Addington Beach and Durban Harbor. The Golden Mile is named so after the golden sand beaches lining the Central Business District.

The Golden Mile promenade has a pulsating scene with the fitness enthusiasts.

The Valley of a thousand hills is a 30 minutes drive from the city center. It is the home to the Zulu tribe since centuries. Phezulu village is a little haven with traditional beehive shaped thatched huts replete with artifacts depicting Zulu culture and rituals.

A ride around the traditional Zulu tuk tuk rickshaw is a must do.

 

Shopping at Shongweni and Bothas Hill markets is a must do. Shongweni farmers and craft market is open every Saturday morning. Some of the must try delicacies are English sausages, baked goods, handcrafted organic cheese and breads. Bothas Hill Food and Craft market is a Sunday flea market. Some of the must try foods make for homemade ice cream, olives, honey, double yolk eggs, fruit cakes, homemade ginger ale and ginger beer and coffee.

These flea markets should top your list as they make for a perfect weekend. Some of the items at sale at these open markets that should definitely be collected as souvenirs are vintage clothing, jewelry, dream catchers, chandeliers, wooden bowls and ceramics, scented candles and perfumes and fragrances.

The Zulu trail is compelling as you get to interact with the local craftsmen and get to know about various African forms of handicrafts and craftsmanship.

A photo op in a traditional Zulu attire is a must do on Zulu trail.
