Bologna has two unique architectural features. Porticoes and towers. The porticoes are a network of covered passageways underneath as an extension of first floor space that allows travelers to walk around the city without getting wet on a rainy day sans umbrella. Residents that come from wealthy families of the city have tall towers beside their homes as a mark of their higher social status. Originally 120 edifices towering 50 metrees, 60 metres and 70 metres only 24 towers survive including the Toree Garisenda mentioned in Inferno by Dante.
